Where Is The Grand Canyon
The majority of the Grand Canyon is located within the boundaries of the Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona. It is one mile deep, spans between 4 to 18 miles wide and is approximately 277 miles long. The canyon is divided into two distinct portions -- North Rim and South Rim. To visit both rims you will need to plan well and give yourself plenty of time. It takes approximately five hours to drive from one rim to the other. There are quite a few differences to be seen at each location. Because the elevation is different, so is the climate and the landscape.

Do you see the green spot in the center of the map just above Flagstaff, Arizona? That's where the Grand Canyon is. Below is a closer view with the Grand Canyon National Park labeled in the center.

If you do not live near Arizona or Utah, a great way you can visit the Grand Canyon is to fly into Phoenix, Arizona and drive north through Sedona, Arizona. The Red Rock Canyons of Sedona are not to be missed. Plan to spend at least a half day there. We left a day early so that we could take a hot air balloon ride in Sedona before going on to the Grand Canyon.
The South Rim is open all year round and is located approximately 80 miles from Flagstaff. The Grand Canyon airport is a short distance to the south of the park and serves limited flights to and from areas like Las Vegas. You can also travel to the South Rim of the park via bus, train or car from cities like Flagstaff, Phoenix and Las Vegas. The South Rim is right off Interstate 40 and is part of what is called the Arizona portion of the canyon.
The North Rim is only open for a limited time, between May and October. It is in the Utah area of the canyon and is located approximately 30 miles to the south of Jacob Lake. The only way to reach the North Rim is by road as there are no trains or planes that travel there. There are several notable points from which the canyon can be viewed. Point Imperial and Cape Royal are stops on the North Rim trail worth checking out. Views of the Colorado River from the North Rim are unlikely. Most people will tell you that the South Rim is the place to visit.
When asking where is the Grand Canyon, the answer is that it is in Arizona. However, as mentioned the Canyon can be seen from Utah. Visiting the Grand Canyon from either rim is an incredible experience that you will never forget. This massive and colorful gorge took millions of years to make and is something that you have to see to believe. Approximately five million tourists come to the Grand Canyon every year. If you are planning to be one of them, book your trip well in advance and be sure to pack your camera.
